Sustainable Materials

We have the ability to produce all upholstery with 100% natural and sustainable materials. Foam, being petrochemical based, is the key unsustainable material in modern upholstery. By removing foam and the fire retardant chemicals that go with it, we produce a truly sustainable collection of upholstery designs. In terms of both the materials used and a build quality that ensures longevity.

Fire Retardant Free

Fire Retardant (FR) Free means that the product contains no fire retardant chemicals. These are present in British Standard upholstery foam. Instead we have opted to use natural materials, some of which are inherently fire retardant.

Is it safe?
Yes, the FR Free natural materials we use have been tested to BS 5852 Schedule II Part II, as part of a composite. Testing materials to BS 5852 Schedule II Part II means the fillings are safe for use in low hazard to high hazard environments, in line with BS 7176. They also conform to CAL TB117, the 2013 flammability standard in California, which has been adopted by a number of US States. Our upholstery fillings also pass the Crib 5 test.

Why are we doing this?
Fire retardant chemicals off-gas VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) into the environments they exist in, both in their time retained in furniture and fabrics, and during the process of their disposal. By removing them we can improve the well-being of our customers, our staff and the world we live in. We are seeing an increasing demand for the use of FR Free natural materials in the UK, while the US has seen a wave of legislation since 2021 banning the use of fire retardant chemicals in furniture across a number of states.
